Early Life

Ella Fitzgerald was born on April 25, 1918. She had many dreams, and many endeavors to what she shot for, being born in Newport, Virginia (VA) . She started her amateur singing debut at age 17, November 21, 1934. She was the daughter of William and Temperance (Tempie) Fitzgerald, but then, her mother, in the early 1920s, and newly arrived partner moved to Yonkers, New York. His name was Joseph De Silva, a Portuguese immigrant. During her early years, Ella gained a formal education at age 6, and it showed teachers she was indeed, intellectual and had a high learn capability, shortly after attending various schools, she was put into  Benjamin Franklin Junior High. Since third grade, Ella envisioned herself as a dancer, one day, she would be like her role-model, Earl "shakehips" Tucker. Her beliefs were Methodist and went to a African Methodist Church. The church provided music teachings to Ella, without charge, but they were brief. In that effort of teaching, Fitzgerald was heavily influenced by Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, and even the "Boswell Sisters". Unfortunately, in 1932, her mother died in a serious car accident that caused her death. When she hit 15, she was forced to with her stepfather, but shortly after, in 1933 at the end of April, she moved with her aunt in Harlem. While in Harlem, due to the death of her mother, she skipped school, and her grades suffered dramatically. Finally, authorities got a hold of her, and placed her in a Colored Orphan Asylum in Riverdale Hudson New York.  Proven that the orphanage was over compasitated, she was relocated 120 miles away from New York, then she was eventually rendered homeless.
